Methods: The distribution and function of gap junctions at the EFI were examined in lenses from several species using a combination of low molecular weight dye injection, freezefracture electron microscopy and immunofluorescence confocal microscopy. &&&: Gap junctions at the EFI, recognisable by electron microscopy, are restricted to the equatorial region of the lens in the frog, rat and human. lmmunolocalisation of gap junction proteins (connexins) in the bovine lens demonstrated a marked reduction in Cx43 positive plaques in the epithelial cells approaching the lens equator. Both MP70 and Cx43 positive plaques were present at the EFI in the bovine lens. D: Epithelium to fibre cell coupling by gap junctions is restricted to cells at the lens equator. This coupling presumably occurs through heterotypic channels, although the existence of homotypic channels cannot be excluded. The cells which are coupled in this region of the lens are those undergoing rapid differentiation; the movement of secondary messengers, ions and metabolites through these channels may regulate this differentiation process.

متن کاملDynamic aspects of accommodation: age and presbyopia
Dear Editor Mordi and Ciuffreda (2004) have used an objective infrared optometer to measure the dynamic aspects of accommodation with aging in a large well-designed study. Their study demonstrates no change in the time constant and peak velocity/amplitude of accommodation with age. Based upon this observation, the authors correctly conclude that their findings imply that presbyopia cannot be du...
متن کاملMorphological Study of the Accommodative Apparatus in the Monkey Eye
For more than a century there has been debate concerning the mechanism of accommodation--whether the lens capsule or lens material itself determines the functional relationship between ciliary muscle contractility and lens deformation during refractive adaptation. This morphological study in monkey eyes investigates the composition and distribution of several connective tissue components in the...
متن کاملHistoanatomical study of the lens and ciliary body in ostrich eye
In the present study, the lenses and ciliary bodies of 20 ostrich eyes were studied macroscopically and microscopically. The histological slides were studied after staining by hematoxylin and eosin, Verhoeff, Van Gieson, and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS). Posterior surface of lens was more convex than its anterior surface. The average lens diameter and thickness were respectively measured as 1.43 ...
متن کاملInsights into the age-related decline in the amplitude of accommodation of the human lens using a non-linear finite-element model.
AIM To understand the effect of the geometric and material properties of the lens on the age-related decline in accommodative amplitude. METHODS Using a non-linear finite-element model, a parametric assessment was carried out to determine the effect of stiffness of the cortex, nucleus, capsule and zonules, and that of thickness of the capsule and lens, on the change in central optical power (...
